The Only Organization System You Need for Your Whole PhD - And Beyond
Pursuing a PhD is a demanding, yet rewarding journey. However, how much of your time and energy is wasted searching for data, or on the trial and error of building a lab organization system?
Organization should be a supportive tool, not another burden.
That’s why I created the “PhD Success System”, a comprehensive digital solution built entirely in Notion.
This system was refined over the 3.5 years of my doctoral studies and was key to my success. It allowed me to move through your days with a clear action plan, easily setting priorities, and knowing the next steps ahead. I stayed on top of my work, reliable, and powered through my PhD quickly without neglecting time for my personal life. When you are set up right, you naturally establish better time and personal boundaries.
Btw, I did my studies in molecular biology, so this system is mostly suited for life science researchers. But please have a look - you might still find it highly valuable.
What Made This System So Powerful?
Interconnectedness. Most solutions miss this, so I built my own. I made sure that all the important things were linked together:
Projects and Experiments: Projects are listed in a dedicated place, directly connected to the experiments within them.
Lab Log: Experiments, consisting of steps done over several days, are logged in a comprehensive Lab Log, linking directly to protocols and materials needed for that step. This ensures all data is ready for writing.
Publication Tracking: You can easily toggle experiments as “Publication Relevant” for clear tracking of high-value data.
Ideation: There is a way to keep track of all experiments planned - or ideas that need validation - whether they were ideas from scratch or inspired by a meeting or paper. You can record them directly within the system.
As we also have to collect our study points, a dedicated Course List and Lecture Notes hub is of course also included.
And the best part about this? You can certainly use this system for your further research career beyond the PhD.
